# Independence and Democratic Institutions

Nehru spent years in British prisons and rose to lead the Indian National Congress alongside a broad, internally diverse anticolonial movement. As prime minister he supported elections, parliamentary government, civil institutions, and a secular constitutional state amid Partition's mass violence and displacement.
