Peace and Women’s Organizing

During World War I, Addams joined women from belligerent and neutral countries at the 1915 Hague congress and worked for mediation. She remained publicly opposed to war even when that position brought intense criticism in the United States.

She became a leader of the Women’s Peace Party and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, advocating disarmament and negotiated settlement. The Nobel Committee honored this sustained peace work in 1931.
