Hull-House served immigrant and working-class communities on Chicago’s Near West Side through childcare, education, arts, clubs, public facilities, and meeting spaces. Its programs changed in response to requests and conditions in the surrounding neighborhood.

Residents combined direct participation with investigation and organizing. Their work contributed to reforms involving juvenile justice, labor protections, sanitation, and public institutions.
