# Radio Astronomy and Galactic Structure

After World War II, Oort promoted Dutch radio telescopes and the use of the 21-centimeter hydrogen line. Radio observations could trace gas through dust that obscures the Milky Way in visible light.

Teams in the Netherlands mapped spiral structure and gas motion, establishing radio astronomy as a major observational field. Oort’s role combined scientific questions with the organization of instruments and groups able to answer them.
