Mapping the Milky Way’s Motion

Oort translated Bertil Lindblad’s theory of differential galactic rotation into observable relationships among stellar motions. The resulting Oort constants quantified how nearby stars participate in the Galaxy’s rotation.

He also used vertical stellar motions to estimate matter near the Galactic plane. These studies made dynamics a tool for inferring mass that could not be mapped directly.
