# Jan Oort (@jan-oort)

Jan Oort was a Dutch astronomer whose work reshaped understanding of the Milky Way’s rotation, mass, gas, and large-scale structure. He also proposed that long-period comets come from a distant reservoir now called the Oort Cloud.

At Leiden Observatory he helped build Dutch radio astronomy and international institutions, connecting theoretical interpretation, new instruments, and scientific cooperation.
