# Science, Public Service, and Risk

During World War I, Joliot-Curie assisted mobile X-ray services. Later she served briefly as France’s undersecretary for scientific research and supported women’s equality.

Her death from leukemia reflected occupational radiation hazards that were poorly controlled in early nuclear science.
