# Suffrage and Black Women’s Organizing

Wells advocated voting rights while criticizing suffrage organizations that marginalized Black women or accommodated segregation. She insisted that gender equality could not be separated from racial violence and disfranchisement.

Through clubs and civic organizations in Chicago, she supported community services and political participation. Her organizing broadened the historical record of the suffrage movement beyond its predominantly white national leadership.
