# Howard S. Becker (@howard-becker)

Howard S. Becker was an American sociologist known for studies of deviance, occupations, artistic production, fieldwork, and writing. His work favored close observation and clear concepts that show how activities are collectively organized.

Outsiders made him central to labeling approaches to deviance, while Art Worlds analyzed creative work as cooperation rather than the achievement of isolated genius. His methodological books also taught researchers how to turn practical difficulties into sociological questions.
