Artificial Intelligence and Cognition

With Allen Newell and others, Simon built early programs that modeled theorem proving and general problem solving. He treated computation both as an engineering tool and as a language for theories of human thought. This work helped found AI and cognitive science while raising enduring questions about search, representation, heuristics, expertise, and the gap between simulated tasks and general intelligence.
