The Five-Dollar Day

In 1914 Ford announced five dollars for an eight-hour day, compared with $2.34 for nine hours. The policy attracted applicants and reduced turnover generated by relentless, repetitive line work. It combined unusually high pay with eligibility rules and intrusive worker oversight, illustrating how welfare, productivity, discipline, and control could coexist in industrial employment.
