# Superconductivity

Measurements by the Leiden team found mercury resistance dropping abruptly to effectively zero around 4.2 kelvin.

The unexpected phase became superconductivity. Its microscopic explanation arrived decades later, while the experimental phenomenon immediately defined a new field.
