Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was a Dutch experimental physicist who first liquefied helium and opened sustained research at temperatures near absolute zero.

In 1911 his Leiden laboratory discovered superconductivity: the disappearance of electrical resistance in mercury below a critical temperature.
