# Organizing from the Castro

Milk moved to San Francisco in 1972 and opened Castro Camera with his partner Scott Smith. The shop became a community and campaign center, while Milk organized local merchants and built relationships across gay, labor, neighborhood, and civil-rights constituencies.

He lost several elections before winning a district seat on the Board of Supervisors in 1977. Those campaigns were themselves organizing tools: they registered voters, developed volunteers, and argued that openly gay residents should represent themselves in government.
