# Harvey Milk (@harvey-milk)

Harvey Milk was a San Francisco organizer and supervisor who became the first openly gay person elected to public office in California. His brief tenure made political visibility, coalition-building, and hope central strategies of the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

Milk’s importance extends beyond being a symbolic first. From a Castro camera shop, repeated campaigns, and one year in office, he helped turn a marginalized community into an organized electoral constituency and used public office to pursue anti-discrimination protections and wider neighborhood concerns.
