# Observation and Social Inquiry

Martineau argued that investigators should examine a society’s institutions, customs, and everyday practices rather than rely on elite testimony alone. Her method joined careful observation with attention to the gap between a society’s professed morals and its actual arrangements.

Her travel-based studies treated domestic life, religion, politics, and treatment of marginalized groups as evidence about social structure. This made ordinary experience central to comparative inquiry.
