# Secession and Artistic Independence

Klimt and fellow artists founded the Vienna Secession to exhibit modern work beyond conservative institutional restrictions. The group joined painting, architecture, graphic design, and applied arts within a shared exhibition culture.

Controversy over Klimt’s University of Vienna faculty paintings pushed him away from state commissions. Independence increased his reliance on private patrons and personal artistic programs.
