The School Strike

In August 2018, at age fifteen, Thunberg began sitting outside the Swedish parliament instead of attending school, demanding stronger action on the climate crisis. After the initial daily protest, she and other young activists continued striking on Fridays.

The tactic was deliberately simple and reproducible: students could withdraw their attendance, make the climate emergency visible, and challenge adults whose policy choices would shape their futures. The hashtag Fridays for Future helped locally organized actions recognize one another as a global movement.
