Mathematics, the Navy, and the Harvard Mark I

Hopper earned a master's degree in mathematics from Yale in 1930 and a doctorate there in 1934. After joining the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, she was assigned to the computation project at Harvard, where she became one of the programmers of the Mark I and helped document how the machine was used.
