# Compilers and machine-independent languages

At the company building UNIVAC I, Hopper pursued methods that made programs easier to write and reuse. Yale's account identifies her team's A-0 work as an early compiler and Flow-Matic as an English-like programming language; the Navy history also records her participation in CODASYL and her contribution to the development of COBOL.
