Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack in October 1973, exposing major intelligence and preparedness failures before Israel recovered militarily. The Agranat Commission investigated the failures and initially focused blame on military officials, but public pressure reached the political leadership; Meir resigned in 1974 despite her coalition's reelection.
