Building Ms. Magazine

In 1971 and 1972, Steinem joined Patricia Carbine, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, and other editors and writers in launching Ms. The magazine created a national forum for reporting and debate on subjects routinely minimized or excluded by established publications.

Ms. was a collective editorial project, not a publication created by Steinem alone. Its long history demonstrates the value—and difficulty—of sustaining independent feminist media while navigating financing, advertising, ownership, and changing generations of readers.
