# Quantum Tunneling and Nuclei

Gamow applied the new quantum mechanics to alpha decay, showing how a particle can tunnel through a nuclear barrier it could not cross classically. The result connected decay rates with nuclear energies.

He also developed nuclear models and brought physical intuition to problems spanning nuclei, stars, and cosmology. His style favored simple models that exposed measurable consequences.
