# The Metropolis and Individuality

Simmel described metropolitan life as a rapid succession of stimuli organized partly through punctuality, calculation, and the money economy. City dwellers develop selective reserve and a blasé attitude as protections against being overwhelmed.

The metropolis can flatten qualitative differences, but it also opens space for specialized identities and individual freedom. Simmel’s account therefore presents urban modernity as both liberating and psychologically demanding.
