# Forms of Social Interaction

Simmel treated interaction as a basic building block of sociology. He distinguished the changing purposes people pursue from forms through which they relate, allowing comparison among patterns such as cooperation, competition, exchange, and conflict.

His analyses of dyads, triads, and overlapping affiliations showed how adding participants can change a relationship’s possibilities. This relational focus helped prepare the ground for network analysis.
