Becker modeled education, training, health, and experience as investments that can raise future productivity and earnings while carrying present costs. The framework helped organize research on schooling and labor markets. It can illuminate incentives but does not by itself capture unequal access, discrimination, credentialing, power, or the nonmarket purposes of education.
