# Abolitionist Print and Oratory

Douglass became a prominent antislavery lecturer and later established The North Star in Rochester. Owning a press gave him an independent platform for abolition, Black political participation, and debate within reform movements.

His speeches used the language of American liberty to expose the contradiction between national ideals and slavery. Print and oratory worked together to build a public capable of political action.
