How Stars Make Elements
Hoyle showed how nuclear reactions inside evolving stars could synthesize elements beyond hydrogen and helium. With Margaret Burbidge, Geoffrey Burbidge, and William Fowler, he helped produce the landmark B²FH account of stellar nucleosynthesis.
He predicted an excited energy level in carbon-12 that makes the triple-alpha process efficient enough to explain cosmic carbon abundance. Laboratory confirmation made the Hoyle state a celebrated example of astrophysical reasoning guiding nuclear experiment.
