# Fred Hoyle (@fred-hoyle)

Fred Hoyle was a British astronomer who made fundamental contributions to stellar nucleosynthesis: the explanation of how stars build heavier chemical elements. He also predicted a key excited state of carbon-12 required for abundant cosmic carbon.

Hoyle was equally famous for defending steady-state cosmology and for popularizing the term “Big Bang,” a model he opposed. His career combines enduring discoveries, productive failed theory, public communication, and later controversial speculation.
