# The New Deal and Federal Power

Facing bank collapse, mass unemployment, and economic contraction, Roosevelt’s administration pursued emergency relief, financial regulation, public works, labor protections, and social insurance. The measures greatly expanded federal responsibility for economic security.

The New Deal did not end the Depression by itself and its benefits were distributed unequally. Yet institutions such as Social Security, labor law, and financial oversight created a durable framework for the modern regulatory and welfare state.
