Freedom Farm and Economic Justice

Hamer understood that voter registration could bring eviction, job loss, and hunger. Her later Freedom Farm Cooperative therefore addressed political participation through shared access to land, food, and material security.

The cooperative extended her civil-rights work beyond formal access to elections. It treated economic independence as infrastructure for citizenship: people facing retaliation needed resources that allowed them to keep organizing and making political choices.
