Gianotti joined CERN as a research physicist in 1994 and worked on calorimetry, detector development, and data analysis. She became spokesperson of the ATLAS collaboration for 2009–2013.

In July 2012, ATLAS and the independent CMS experiment announced evidence for a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson. Gianotti presented the ATLAS result, but the discovery belonged to two large collaborations and decades of accelerator, detector, theoretical, and computing work.
