Mapping Earth and Sky

Halley conducted voyages to measure magnetic variation and produced charts useful to navigation. He also proposed using transits of Venus to determine the Sun’s distance.

Some Earth models were speculative and wrong. His broader importance lies in connecting mathematical prediction, systematic records, expeditions, and public scientific institutions.
