Little Dancer and Sculptural Experiment

Degas exhibited Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer in 1881 as a wax figure wearing actual fabric, shoes, hair, and ribbon. Its mixed materials and unidealized adolescent subject disturbed contemporary viewers.

Most of his sculptures remained private working objects and were cast in bronze after his death. They reveal sculpture as a laboratory for muscular tension, balance, and repeated bodily motion.
