# Edgar Degas (@edgar-degas)

Edgar Degas was a French artist associated with Impressionism who preferred to call himself a Realist or Independent. Academically trained, he focused on modern urban life—especially ballet, horse racing, cafés, laundresses, milliners, and bathing figures—through drawing, painting, pastel, print, photography, and sculpture.

His cropped compositions and unusual viewpoints create the appearance of fleeting observation, though they were often carefully constructed. His formal innovations coexist with difficult aspects of his life, including entrenched antisemitism during the Dreyfus era.
