# Douglass North (@douglass-north)

Douglass North was an American economic historian whose work made institutions central to explanations of long-run performance. He shared the 1993 economics prize for combining theory and quantitative history to explain economic and institutional change. His later new institutional economics rejected the assumption that surviving rules are necessarily efficient.
