Tutu’s public language often emphasized human interdependence, dignity, forgiveness, and restoration—ideas frequently associated with ubuntu. Reconciliation, in his account, required truth-telling rather than forgetting harm.

He remained willing to criticize liberation leaders and governments after apartheid, resisting the idea that solidarity required silence. His later advocacy extended to global peace, economic injustice, and the equal dignity of LGBTQ people.
