Bourgeois Dignity and Growth

In her Bourgeois Era project, McCloskey argues that material accumulation, trade, and institutions alone cannot explain the extraordinary scale of modern growth. A change in ideas—greater dignity and liberty for merchants, inventors, and ordinary improvement—made innovation socially legitimate and widely imitable. The thesis competes with explanations centered on empire, capital, science, energy, or institutions.
