Institutions and Prosperity

Acemoglu and collaborators distinguish inclusive institutions, which broaden participation and constrain arbitrary power, from extractive institutions that concentrate benefits and block entry. Their empirical work uses historical variation to connect political rules and colonial strategies to long-run development. The influential framework has also prompted debate over measurement, causal identification, geography, culture, and historical scope.
