# Institutions and a Collective Legacy

The NFWA and AWOC joined to form the organization that became the United Farm Workers. Its campaigns helped farm workers secure contracts and built a national voice for people excluded from many ordinary labor protections.

Chavez used marches, fasting, boycotts, and appeals to nonviolence to hold public attention, but his leadership was neither the whole movement nor beyond criticism. The enduring legacy belongs to the workers and organizers who created unions, clinics, service institutions, and political pressure that outlasted any single campaign or leader.
