After his family lost its Arizona farm, Chavez worked in migrant agriculture and left school after the eighth grade. He later learned house-meeting and voter-registration methods through the Community Service Organization under organizer Fred Ross.

In 1962, Chavez left the CSO and, with Dolores Huerta and others, developed the National Farm Workers Association. Organizers traveled, recruited family by family, and built services and membership before the organization had the leverage of a recognized union.
