# Jazz-Soaked Philosophy

West uses jazz as both a cultural tradition and a model for philosophical life: improvisation, disciplined voice, collaboration, and courageous response to catastrophe. His University of Edinburgh Gifford Lectures framed this approach through a path from Socrates to John Coltrane.

The theme also reflects the breadth of his teaching, which moves among philosophy, religion, politics, literature, cultural theory, and music rather than separating them into sealed domains.
