Wartime Closure and Couture Return

Chanel closed her couture operations at the outbreak of war while perfume and accessory sales continued. In 1944 she was briefly questioned over her relationship with German officer Hans Günther von Dincklage; after years away from haute couture, she reopened the house in 1954.
