# Career, Family, and the Pay Gap

Goldin's research finds that much contemporary earnings divergence develops after family formation, even among similarly educated workers. Some high-paying jobs disproportionately reward long, inflexible, or on-call hours. The problem is therefore tied to job design, caregiving, household allocation, and the cost of temporal flexibility—not only occupational sorting or unequal pay for identical work.
