Lévi-Strauss compared myths not by searching for one original story but by tracing transformations among related narratives. Oppositions and mediating terms provided tools for analyzing how stories work through conceptual tensions.

In works on classification and myth, he also challenged the idea that Indigenous thought lacked intellectual rigor. His analyses emphasized systematic observation and conceptual ordering in many forms of human knowledge.
