Lévi-Strauss’s early major work examined kinship systems through rules of marriage, alliance, and exchange. Instead of viewing descent alone as the basis of social organization, he analyzed how prohibitions and reciprocal ties connect groups.

This alliance-centered framework became a major reference point in social anthropology, even as later scholars challenged its abstractions and assumptions about gender and exchange.
