Sherman alters her appearance through wigs, makeup, clothing, prosthetics, sets, and digital manipulation. Her own body is working material, while the pictured identities remain performed constructs.

This method complicates the idea that a photograph reveals an authentic sitter. Each image shows how portrait conventions and viewers’ expectations cooperate to produce a person.
