Cindy Sherman is an American artist who stages and photographs invented characters to examine how identity is constructed through images. Serving as model, director, costumer, and photographer, she draws on cinema, fashion, portraiture, art history, and social media without presenting conventional self-portraits.

Her work makes familiar types feel unstable: viewers recognize a role but cannot locate a complete story or authentic person behind it. That ambiguity has made her practice central to debates about gender, representation, aging, class, and photographic truth.
