# Reading Composition from Starlight

Payne applied Meghnad Saha’s ionization equation to Annie Jump Cannon’s stellar spectral classes. She showed that changing line strengths largely reflect temperature-dependent ionization rather than radically different elemental mixtures.

Her analysis implied that hydrogen and helium vastly dominate stars, contrary to the prevailing assumption that stellar composition resembled Earth’s. This connected spectral classification with physical stellar atmospheres.
