White Collar examined salaried employees and the expansion of bureaucratic work in mid-century America. Mills linked occupational change to status anxiety, political detachment, salesmanship, and the transformation of the old middle classes.

His broader account of mass society explored how large organizations and mass communication could separate individuals from effective publics. This concern joined his studies of work and power to a democratic critique.
